Overview
The Dubuque Bike Coop (often referred to as the Coop) was founded in 2012 by several biking and community advocates that saw a need for a bicycle cooperative in Dubuque to help people get on bikes. We currently operate under the 501c3 status of the Dubuque Rescue Mission and are in the process of securing our own stand-alone 501c3 status. Our shop is located 2206 Central Ave in Dubuque.
We operate under the guidance of a steering committee, which for the 2017-2018 fiscal year is as follows:
President: Dave Hartig
Vice-President: Rob Williams
Secretary: Austin Vize
Treasurer: Henry Kohring
Communication Coordinator: Will Layton
Trustee: Ron Bensink
Trustee: Steve Heer
Trustee: Rick Mihm
Member-at-Large: Joan Kariuki
Member-at-Large: Willie O’Brien
Mission Statement
Our mission is to build community by utilizing bicycles to promote healthy living and wellness along with environmental sustainability. We are committed to providing bicycles and educational opportunities for safety, repair, and riding.
Results
Since our founding, we have collected several hundred bicycles that would often otherwise be destined for the landfill. Well over 200 bikes have been turned back out onto the streets from our checkout program or partnerships with other local nonprofits. We have hosted numerous public and private workshops and maintenance clinics and have promoted bicycling safety at several city-wide and school-specific bicycle rodeos and safety checks. We have worked with entities such as the City of Dubuque and the Downtown Neighborhood Association to install several bike racks and “fixit stations” around the city.
